Mayans, Cenotes and Coba // Cancun, Mexico // Destination Wedding

There’s only one thing to do when shooting a destination wedding in Mexico – other than photograph the wedding itself, of course! And that’s explore.
I’ve not been to Mexico before, so you could say that I was more than just a little keen to see everything I could while I was out there. In fact, I think my daily squeaks of excitement became a familiar soundtrack to the entire trip. (Sorry guys!)
So while we spent many an hour enjoying the modern, built-for-tourist facilities (which were DIVINE!), we also opted to venture out to explore the culture, history and beauty of the Latin American country.
Cue – the Mayans.

A trip to Esmerela, a traditional Mayan village out in the sticks of the Yucatan peninsula was in order, where we toured their village and saw how they live before taking part in a ceremony performed by the village Shaman.  This was to cleanse us before a quick dip (or leap, in my case) into their Cenote; a sink hole filled with natural, calcium-rich water formed by the collapse of the limestone above it.  An estimated 6000 interlinking cenotes are found throughout Mexico, and their clear, cold water make for a stunning swim and snorkel.

The last visit of the day was to Coba, an ancient Mayan city found deep in the jungle in the state of Quintana Roo.  The city is though to have housed around 500,000 inhabitants in its heyday, with lagoons, a baseball field, pyramids, and stone causeways leading to other Mayan cities, such as the world wonder Chichen Itza.  The main attraction of the city is the 42 metre tall pyramid, ‘Nohoch Mul’, which you can still climb today.  The views from the top are absolutely breathtaking (as is the climb up there!), with sweeping vistas of the dense jungle surrounding you.

It really was a work trip… Promise!
